Just an update. It turns out that the replacement cup I installed had a different height and the pawls would not catch the cup. Installed the old cup and the replacement recoil and all is good now.
Thanks for the feedback. The pawls on both the original and the replacement are metal but I suspect both were not coming our far enough. Maybe because they are gummed up. Unfortunately for me I already dropped off the mower at my local shop for them to have a look at it. I'll update the post...
Went to start subject and pull cord was normal on first pull but no start. Pulled cord a second time and there was no tension on the cord. First thought was that the metal hooks that grab the starter cup were damaged or that the cup itself was worn. Removed both but no apparent damage. Replaced...
Just looking for some feedback. I recently sharpened the cutting blade on the subject. Should I have also sharpened the mulching blade? Thanks in advance for any responses.
You could try a different oil in the fuel mix. I used to use Lawnboy oil exclusively but switched to Shell Nautilus 3 years ago and smoke is only a bit at start up.

Well that was a self learning experience. Out of 4 recoils in my stock pile....2 were toast...of the other 2 one had metal wings that pop out when you pull the cord and the other was plastic which I can only assume was a knock off. Anyways it will be interesting to see what is on my back up...
