I have seen a couple of these over the years. You listed the bolt in sensor but there should be a wire that goes from that sensor to 695693 terminal plug which screws into the extra oil fill plug

What kind of spark tester are you using. If using the blink style tester they can give fault positives. And the last 10 sets of points I tried to install ended with me replacing the coil itself with the new electronic coils and did away with the points.

I am leaning toward the ECU not seeing input from the speed sensor. And if it can't see the engine rotating it won't fire the coils for spark.

My thoughts would be the coil in the solenoid has shorted and the pin for the negative side may be the weak point therefore the high resistance cause the smoking and damage.
