You did what I would and that's clean the tank. Did you find anything? I have had old machines that even after a tank clean out it still was shedding crap into the tank and causing what you mentioned. Can you inspect the inside and see how rusted it is? Filter clean when changed?
Has the...
Me too as I never found anyone who would take the rebuild on.
That would have been better considering all the trouble we had finding the right unit.

While they don't go bad suddenly they DO break internal parts and stop just like yours did. I just replaced a Hydro on a Super-Z for this exact problem. Exactly what happened to you. Mowing away fine then like switch the left side went dead. Found a chunk of busted metal inside. Nothing bound up...
Good points by StarTech. There was a number of problems with those Hustlers and the main one was the brackets holding the two hydo's together and in alignment was weak and the bolts and nuts loosened up and fell off.
There are two additional brackets that I installed on my Raptor SD54. Here is...
Good luck! I went thru this with another Hustler.
Short version: You will need to spend the $1000-$1200 if you want an OEM replacement. You might find a cheap off brand china one but it will still be multi hundred dollars. How long will that cheaper one last?
Just cringe and pay the price...
I ONLY install oil filters by hand!
Snug then another 1/2-3/4 turns. I have had my fill of idiots that tighten the filters so tight I have to deform the metal can to get them off. Oil filters just don't need all that force!

Hey I have had some that looked like that!
But I was pretty embarrassed about it and quickly put a set of new blades on.
I just was not aware and noticed that it was not cutting as good as it use to. Well there was a very good reason for that!
I like the ones that are installed upside down...
Have you actually looked at a Raptor SD54 mower?
The muffler is not attached to the frame at all?
From the parts manual;
It bolts to the engine only.
