The noise may not have even indicated a problem though. I was just being extra careful. I've heard nothing but good things about echo products.

I went ahead and returned it and ordered a new one. That is a very bad sign on a brand new unit. I am just glad that it started within 30 days and not a couple months after my purchase. Who knows what else could have been wrong with it? I wasn't going to get stuck with a lemon.
