Wow that's a lot of smilies! haha
I would suggest Honda. Yes, my Honda is more expensive than your budget but there are cheaper Honda HRX mowers. It is worth the price....the mower will last you FOREVER!! Mine has AWESOME traction. See this thread (there are pictures of the hill in post #5): http://www.lawnmowerforum.com/honda-forum/12234-honda-hrx217-5-stars-traction.html

Honda Website: Honda Lawn Mowers - HRX HRR HRC HRS Mowers

FYI.jpg One of the Honda HRX mowers was rated as the "best push/self-propell mower" a few years back!

John Deere self propels are nice, I'm not sure about all the newer John Deere's, but I have an older John Deere 14SB that will climb hills any day, and the Kawi engine runs like a dream.

There are two kinds of self propelled homeowner lawnmowers in the size you describe. Those under $500. And those over $500. Bells and whistles keep the lower end near the mark. Lack of bells and whistles keep the upper end near the mark.

 Heres one for you, it is a little over your 500$ budget. Bravo 25 commerical, Honda engine. With retail prices starting @ 999$. You can check it out @ybravo.com. Now who in the world would pay that kind of money for a walk behind mower?

Anyone that wants a commercial walk behind mower in that size will pay it. They will do it so they can get a commercial grade lawnmower with a commercial grade engine and a commercial grade transmission and a commercial grade warranty with commercial grade service. It does not take very long to wear out a homeowner type self propelled lawnmower. I would imagine the transmission alone on commercial grade mowers is half the cost of the mower.

That kind of money, that's cheap for a commercial. The Toro Turf master 30" and the sister Exmark 30" are selling for $1799. With the Kawasaki FJ 180V

A lawn care business owner did not like the YBravo 25. They said they didn't like how it only had one speed (fast). See it here (post #7): http://www.lawnmowerforum.com/general-mower-discussion/11958-bravo-25-anyone-ever-used-one.html.
