Interesting debate going here.
I decided to check the given toro website https://www.toro.com/getpub/8833 Operator manual for the tractor. all illustrations show a twin.
The parts book https://www.toro.com/en/parts/partdetails?id=5296 shows both single and twins were used in the 266H
service manual for 260 series states "Engines All tractors since 1994 were manufactured with Kohler engines ranging from 14 to 20 Horsepower. For more information on servicing the engines, please contact the Kohler Company."
Finally a search for parts -- https://www.partstree.com/models/cv16-61514-kohler-command-pro-engine-made-for-toro-16hp-11-9kw/ --shows the model and spec number to be a twin.

I guess it is possible that the wrong engine ID label got slapped on at the factory. But as Rivets said (post #19) "That engine was not even around when that tractor was built."

Not sure if Farm Geezer bothered to ask his grandson (original owner?) if he knows any history of the mower that could possibly clear up the mystery since he gave it to him.

The Command (CV) series Kohler in my opinion is the best engine Kohler built, easy to get parts for as for the mower its strong and well built but parts will be primarily be thru a Toro dealer other than high use parts provided in aftermarket but as old as it is don't be surprised if parts start going away soon.

According to a post by rivets "your unit was built in 1994" referring to the tractor

Note the serial number of the engine starts with 24 which makes it a 1994 production.
So it appears this engine would have been on this tractor from the factory.
