what is the psi for a gravely 12 hp Kohler

This may sound like a dumb question. But since Kohler has made several 12 hp engines over the years which 12hp engine do you have. Model number helps alot.
 
An older engine without a compression release mechanism, I would say 75psig minimum will support combustion.

We need the engine label ID information to understand exactly what engine you are dealing with.
 
That spec number is actually the part number for the K301 short block. Kohler doesn't give compressio readings for that engine due to the operation of the ACR compression release.
 
If you mean it is a K301, that will make it an older cast iron engine. Very few parts are still available and the ones that are available are priced at incredibly high prices.

A respectable compression to support combustion would be about 80-90 PSIG with cranking multiple revolutions to build up the compression gauge pressure.

I do not recall any of the early cast iron Kohler engines having any compression release, these were early flat head engine designs.

A couple of pictures of the engine would go a long way toward helping you better.
