Thanks Boo, but I'm sitting here feeling pretty damn stupid about the whole affair... I took the old shive apart, (removed the saltwater ruined bearings and drove out the sleeve), none, absolutely none of it was stainless, if being non-magnetic is part of the criteria. So, in all my wisdom (yeah, right!) I took the new Delrin pulley shive and re-drilled it with a 9/16" bit, which was the closest drill I had to the actual O.D. of the sleeve. Then I reamed the hole some and did what I could to enlarge it to almost the sleeve's o.d. Then I put it in a press I made some years ago (It uses a 20 ton hydraulic jack, which could easily destroy the press frame!) and pressed the sleeve through the plastic shive, leaving 1/32" of sleeve exposed on each end. Then!! THEN I realized that now instead of pinching the sides of the shive between the retaining washer and the bracket, I was now going to pinch the ends of the sleeve which sure as hell wasn't going to slip inside of the shive! So I greased it up well and left it loose enough to turn, but it still doesn't because the Delrin is so slippery..

I'm back to the drawing board.. and alternately scratching and kicking my arse..

Life is hard when you're dumb, know what I mean? ... Well, no you wouldn't 'cause you're a smart-arsed flyboy... Me? I'm just a dumb-arsed boat sailor... Probably brain damaged by oxygen starvation and too much pressure.. Or maybe too much CO2 when under pressure... as they say, "Hard tellin', not knowin' ."

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

Roger,
Looks like Boo beat me to it but check out McMaster.com for spacers/axle supports. They have great stuff and service.
Tom

Thanks Tom...

See my admittance to Boo.. But when I have a brain storm, I'll know where to look.

Fun clearing fallen trees on the back acreage, a decent sized white oak and a giant poplar. The oak is now benches down by the river clearing. The poplar took a bunch of other stuff down with it creating a dangerous tangled mess.

Darryl,

Popple ain't worth much, but I love white oak, Used to be a lot of it up this way, but now it's mostly red (piss) oak. (Because of the way it smells when cut green.)

I have been harvesting some Eastern Hornbeam (Hophornbeam) to dry in the overhead of my shop for handles and stuff. I also just slid a nice straight piece of oak (red) up there too. My favorite wood for tool handles is white ash, Tough wood.

That is a right mess you have there. . Looks lime a lot of fire wood if you need it.
Tom

Tom,

If anyone intended to use Popple for fire wood, they would have to cut it up, split it and store it under dry cover as fast as possible.. Popple will dowse (Maine word for getting 'punky' or 'rotten') if it even 'thinks' about getting wet. Like a popple log laying on the ground could go dowsey if say a medium sized dog was to happen by and lift his leg on a nearby standing tree. It doesn't take much..

Yes the poplar does rot fast. My neighbor who the oak almost fell on will burn it. Hes actually my caretaker and usually cuts up anything that blocks the trails or roadway but his saw is down. He helps take care of the place in exchange for a place to hike and swim the dogs every evening. I wouldn't want him cleaning up the poplar mess anyway. It splits easily but burns more like a soft wood. I dropped 5 trees that size or bigger and burned them when we first bought our house. Well the tree guy I used to work for dropped them. I spent the next 2 months cleaning up, lol. They were way too close to the house and cars for comfort.

Use your press to press out the sleeve you installed and try it with no sleeve just running the axle inside. If it doesn't work all you have to do is recut and install the sleeve.
Make any sense?
