Aging Engine

I have a 7 HP B&S engine that runs good, but I think the piston ring or something is wearing out. I can mow with it and all of a sudden it will smoke like a locomotive for about 15 seconds with that oil burning smell. Then the smoke goes away for 1 to 5 minutes and it happens again. Since new walk behind mowers and replacement engines are not that expensive, do most people just throw away a smokey engine even though it still runs OK?
 
My neighbor has a Quantum that does this. Tech said it was the intake valve leaking. He almost lost a couple fingers awhile back with it and has hired his mowing done. The lady right beside him tossed a chunk through the side of her lawnmower a few days later and hires the same person to mow. I lost a window AC the same day. Unlucky neighborhood the last year. Three folks died, three blown car engines, several blown lawnmowers, injured fingers, one fellow lost both legs in a car accident, one broke her hip, one scarred her face in a bike crash, one injured her neck in a rear end wreck, and out of a family of three daughters all unmarried all three got pregnant. Can you imagine that? All in just two blocks.

Sounds like those couple blocks were built on an old burial ground:wink: I've seen poltergeist, I know what happens next:thumbdown:
 
Thanks for all your input guys. I don't think it's worth the expense to tear down that engine and fix the problem or overhaul that engine for the same cost as buying a replacement engine for it. It's not like we're talking about a $3000 car engine. BTW, my mower isn't self propelled either. So just buying a new one for about $200 - $250 puts me way ahead of paying a mechanic the same amount of money for that old thing. :laughing:

That's probably the better choice. :thumbsup:
 
I use Bardahl No Smoke that usually for old cars. Very thick oil like honey. Use about 100ml then top up with SAE 30 oil. It works right away.
