    Queston about honing a cylinder

I have been told that when I replace the rings on a Lawnboy, I should hone the cylinder to help the rings seat. Can somebody give this self-taught Lawnboy mechanic some instruction on how to do this? What type of hone to use, what type of lubricant to use when honing?

Looking for a part for 1978 7086 mower

I am looking for a salvage shroud and gas tank for a 1978 Lawnboy 7086 mower, although there were several models in this timeframe that used the same shroud and tank. I have found a picture from the internet that shows the parts.

When is a LawnBoy truly worn out? I surely don't know.

So, I have been repairing and refurbishing a lot of LawnBoy mowers, both for my own "collection" (haha) and maybe to sell. Well of course I gave my son a Silver Series 4.5 hp steel deck 10201 rock stock mower to use. It failed on him the other day. It had no compression, piston spun freely...

    Oil seal question 2-stroke Lawnboy

For a while now I have been using replacement oil seals from Stens. They are black and the outside has a rubbery coating. They work fine. I recently ordered some seals from another vendor and they came in and they are slightly different, they are blue in color and the exterior is hard metal. I'm...

Question regarding "F" and "V" series engines

If the newer "V" (Silver series 4.5 hp) engines and the previous "F" engines use the same rings, piston and con rod, how can the "V" series produce 1/2 more horsepower? If all "F" series engines are the same internally, how can some be rated for 4 hp and a few 5 hp?

Are the rings and piston the same on "F" engine and "V" engine LawnBoy mowers?

Are the rings and piston the same on "F" engine and "V" engine LawnBoy mowers? Somewhere I read they were, and I want to know. Are the rings, or rings and piston the same on the "F" engine and the "V" engine lawnboys? (silver series) 4.5 hp. I would suspect the con-rod is not.

    Difficulty backing up..self-propelled LawnBoy F-engine 680546

I have this very nice self-propelled LawnBoy aluminum deck F-engine, Walbro metal carb mower, Model 680546. I have cleaned the wheel gears, both drive "dogs" engage and there is no resistance rolling forward. The self-propelled works fine. The ONLY thing is that there is a lot of resistance...

Frustrated, trying to get Weedeater to run.

I've got a few older weedeaters I'm trying to get running, and I am having some difficulty. Take for example, a couple of featherlite models of different vintages. Both have 120lbs compression, as measured via a compression tester replacing the spark-plug, both have good spark, as indicated by...

What fluid for ultrasonic cleaner for small weed eater carbs??

Got a small ultrasonic cleaner at Harbor Freight, thought I would use it for cleaning small 2-cycle carb parts such as used on weed eaters. The instructions caution against using solvents and oil based stuff. I was thinking Simple Green diluted with water? Any recommendations?

Foam for air filters small 2-cycle engines on weed eaters and things?

Buying specific stock number foam filters for small 2-cycle weed eaters is rather pricey, if one is going to fix them up and sell them. There should be a source of sheet foam for filters that one could just cut down to size with a scissors. Any ideas?

Threading fuel line into fuel tank on older model Weed Eater

I have a Poulan Weed Eater brand string trimmer that is almost like the featherlite models, but old enough to only have one fuel line going into fuel tank, and the carb does not have a primer bulb, just choke. Anyway, on "MOST" 2-cycle trimmers the fuel line enters the tank near where the...

Changing a Lawnboy "C" series engine to "D" series piston and cylinder?

Changing a Lawnboy "C" series engine to "D" series piston and cylinder? It is my understanding that one can change a "C" series engine to a later "D" series piston and cylinder. From what I have read, one has to also change the connecting rod. My question is, with a "D" series connecting rod...

Question on differences between "C" and "D" engines.

OK, based on my personal observation, the late "C" and "D" engines look pretty much similar in bricktop form. AFAIK the "C" engines have conventional recoil starters on top, the "D" engines have the "fingertip" start. The "C" engines have a pull-up choke and on-off switch in the same place the...

My Newest D-engine restoration. (I love D-engine Lawnboys!!)

I have just "restored" another D-engine 19" deck mower. Well, actually it is made up of bits and pieces from 4 other parts mowers. I had a D-433 engine for a couple decades on top of a busted up 21" aluminum deck that I used, I put a new piston and rings, new reeds, all new gaskets, rebuilt...

Odd problem with D-400 engine Lawnboy Model 5083

I just rebuilt this Model 5083 Lawnboy with a D-400 series engine. I put new rings in it, among other things. This has a 2-ring piston. I started it and adjusted it and mowed some with it, and after I finished one small yard, I noticed when I switched it off, that it appeared to be dragging...

Question about those devices that eliminate points on older mowers such as "D" series Older Lawnboy mowers with "C" and "D" series engines often have points unless very late model D-600 engines. Duraforce 6.5hp rings?

    Very frustrated with D-engine mower

I've got a late D-series engine mower. It is an International, but it was made by Lawnboy, and is Lawnboy thru and thru. I have replaced the rings, new seals, gaskets, new reeds. It has good compression, and it has spark. The darn thing won't start. I'm tearing my hear out. It is an early...

    DuraForce 6.5hp questions

Did LawnBoy make a non-self propelled mower with the DuraForce 6.5 hp engine? All I ever get are self-propelled. Also, there are those who claim the DuraForce 6.5 hp engine was actually made by Tecumsah. Is there truth to this?

Craftsman push mower, Briggs & Stratton carb question

I was given an older entry level (I think) Sears walk-behind mower with a very common Briggs & Stratton 4.5 hp motor. The kind with the carb on top the gas tank as an integral part of the gas tank. It has the primer-bulb carb. I am a LawnBoy man, not Briggs, so I am not too familiar with...

Later "F" and "V" steel mufflers, should they be painted?

The stamped-steel mufflers used under the deck on later model Lawnboy 2-cycle mowers. I have seen factory replacements that come painted. I was wondering, in restoration, after one cleans up one of these mufflers, if they should be painted on the exterior surface. Wouldn't they get hot enough...

Lawnboy reed plates and gaskets, why the tiny hole?

Lawnboy reed plates (at least on the "F" engines), and yes I know the reed plate is a part of the crankcase, have a tiny hole above the reeds, this hole is present in the original gaskets and there is also this teeny-tiny hole on the carb. flange. Many replacement gaskets don't have this hole...

Walbro metal carb differences on Lawnboy mowers?

It seems there were variations in the Walbro metal carbs used at times on Lawnboy mowers. Some were choke only, others had choke and primer. Of those that had a primer, some had the hose fitting for the primer on the side of the carb, others had it on the bottom of the carb, going thru the nut...

Cleaning Lawnboy engines? How do you guys do it?

OK, I like to disassemble and repaint the decks and gas tanks, sometimes handlebars, other bits and pieces, make the mowers look like new. Generally the aluminum engines themselves are really quite nasty, with oily dirt, sometimes oxidation of the aluminum. I generally use 2-3 cans of spray...

    F engine different horsepowers?

I've got several "F" engine lawnboy mowers, some say 4 hp, I have one that says 5 hp. Looking up parts on the Toro/Lawnboy site, the piston, rings, con-rod all appear the same part numbers. How did they get different horsepowers?

My newest project, restoration of a 7084 late model Bricktop.

Thought the forum might like to see my latest project. The mower was given to me in payment for fixing another mower. Model 7084 fairly late-model Bricktop. 21", alloy deck. Alas, it doesn't run yet, I need to install rings, so will be taking it apart again. So far, new reeds, new coil...

D-400 series engine muffler gasket and plate question.

I have a Model 7084, with a D-400 type engine, bricktop. In looking at the parts diagrams on the Lawnboy parts website it appears that there is a sort of shield plate that is a separate part that goes between the gasket and the cylinder head. On my particular one, this was not present. The...

F engine round steel muffler. Use sealer?

Open to run, Close to run CD coil packs for F-engine mowers

Open to run, close to run CD coils. Early F-engine Lawnboys used a CD coil pack that required the wire terminal on the back to be grounded to run (close to run), later F-engine and all newer Lawnboy 2-cycle engines use the open to run style, where the terminal is only grounded to kill engine...

    F-engine fuel shut-off leaking....

The various F-engine shrouds that have the gas tank molded in, have a integral gas shut-off. Some have a long plastic lever, some later models a short lever, both use the same pressure clamp style fitting with a rubber like washer underneath to form a liquid tight seal. This little round...

How do you guys install rings?

On "F" and "V" engines, with no removable head, how do you guys install rings. I know the piston has to go back in thru the crankcase, but there is very little room for a ring compressor. I haven't tried, need advice first.

    What I have learned today....

Never, never, never assume a cork float in a LawnBoy carb. is OK. After completely redoing a nice LawnBoy mower, new seals, new reed, new paint, the darn carb started flooding and leaking, all over my new paint, yuck. I put it in a pail of gasoline and it sank like a stone. I then tried out...

Are Duraforce 4.5 hp engines the same on walk behinds, and self-propelled walk behind

In order to keep my self-propelled Duraforce 4.5 hp 2-cycle lawnboy walk behinds running, since I have a number of non-self-propelled DuraForce 4.5 hp mowers with very good engines, I was wondering if they were a straight-over bolt-on exchange? Foggy Memory..was there a Lawn Boy that had separate oil injection?

Back in the late 1990's, or very early 2000's, I seem to remember seeing at a (now gone) local LawnBoy dealer a super deluxe LawnBoy that supposed to have had direct oil injection, not needing to mix oil with the gas. It was very expensive, circa $600. Also, I thought it was too heavy for my...
