Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

Thanks, Bert.

I dunno 'zactly whats in the stuff, and,as I am unable to get in touch with the company as of yet,
Nobody has been able to tell me.
I have seen where they list their stuff as eco friendly, so maybe it is as you say.
I tired it on a few batteries and some golf cart batteries with no luck.
Maybe I wasn't holding my mouth correctly ??

There is a lot of snake oil out there for rejuvinating batteries.
If it actually worked reliabily there would be revived battery shops on every street corner.
Most of them ( unlike what we used to do in the 70's & 80's ) won't work with todays batteries.
This is because batteries have changed both physically & chemically.
Remember when you were young, it took 2 people to lift & carry a 13 plate heavy duty battery.
Now days you can comfortably carry one ( or 2 ) under each arm.
This is because everything is thinner.
When I started at Sims, battery plates were 2mm (std ) to 4mm ( HD Off Road ).
Now days they are 0.5mm to 1mm.
Paste used to be 3mm thick, now it is lucky to be 1mm.
Most batteries fail mechanically, plates break off the busbars and fall to the bottom or they warp and short out.

Then there is the chemistry
Old batteries were Pb-Pb/Sb
New batteries are Pb/Ag - Pb/Ca with Pb/Sb terminals & busbars .

By far the best battery you can use are the Pressure Valve Regulated - Adsorbent Glass Matt ( PVR-AGM ) ones
And of them, the Spiral Cell ones are best by a long shot.
Funny enough they are also the most expensive by a long shot.

Have any of you learned sages (or even, those less so...) ever heard of an outfit called "Battery Doctors?"
They marketed chemicals and chargers to re-energize sulphated lead acid batteries.
I wound up with a bunch of their chemicals and want them gone.
I have not been able to contact them via the phone #'s which I have found on the www.
I sent them an e-mail request, but have yet to have then respond.

What say the collective mentality of this crowd??

Never heard of them.

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

Way back in the flooded cell days there were a lot of battery addatives most of which worked to counteract all the metallic ions that got introduced because people used tap water to top up their batteries thus introducing Ca, Mn, Mg & Fe. Slightly better was the people who used tank water off their galvanised iron roof, stored in their galvanised iron tanks thus adding Zn.
Even cheap distilled water was boiled in copper tubs & condensed in copper pipe so funny enough it had dolops of Cu in it.
Then there were some with Na, Ph & Kn. These do not affect the battery chemistry but react with the free O to stop it forming Pb O thus killing the paste.
Remember that both H & O are produced when water electrolizes.

Things are different now days.
Batteries are made using deionized water ( cheaper then distilling ) and you don't get anywhere near as much gassing so no free Oxygen atoms to worry about.

First of all TOM! Glad you are on the mend! I have missed you around here.. Behave yourself and follow the instructions the folks from P/T give you and you should end up 100%.. Just think.. With this 'forced' practice, you may end up being ambidextrous and learn how to gain a stroke when changing hands!

Batteries: When my father and I did a lot of marine wiring we used to use Surette batteries from Canada. They were very heavy duty lead acid batteries and size for size, out weighed their competition by a good deal. An 8D was about all I could muster as a youngster!

Bert-Man is correct. AGM (matt-glass) batteries are the way to go today. They will survive a great deal of abuse and still survive. Like being discharged nearly 100% and left out in very cold weather at the same time and will still recover and recharge fully. Try that with a regular lead-acid battery and you might as well just recycle it. It will never completely recover and fully recharge.

I have a heavy duty commercial group 31 AGM battery for the 'house' battery in my boat . (Runs everything except starting the engine - that battery is separate.) The damn thing cost me $235 and weighs nearly 70 pounds! I can operate my trolling motor all day long without any concern..

By the way, anybody out there who has a boat and wants to install an additional battery and keep the starting battery separate, but still be able to recharge it with the single alternator in their engine, drop me a line. I can tell you how to do it. Blue Seas makes an Automatic Charging Relay (ACR) that will isolate the two batteries electrically, yet allow them to be recharged from a single source. (Including a single circuit battery charger, saving money when you buy a new charger.) It makes for a very reliable electrical system.
