Hi all, I am trying to fix a Yardman ... model # 12AV829C755 ,21" mower for a neighbour, with the drive belt off, the transmission pulley spins freely, I'm pretty sure that this indicates a broken shaft,or key .... yes ?.I am reluctant to delve any further into this issue. Is the pulley keyed to a shaft or perhaps a set screw has come loose :)
Thanks.

I don't think so. The drive mechanism likely needs to be engaged, if not, it just freewheels. Nice diagram a couple of clicks away: Yard-Man Walk Behind - 12AV829C755

Thanks logan01, it looks like the drive is engaged simply by the action of the transmission shaft pivoting and pulling the belt tighter against the pulley, which still free wheels.I see from the diagrams that there is a nut on top of the pulley ... no sign of a key though.Perhaps the nut has come loose .... I did not get that far ... yet !.
Thank you again.

You bet. Hope it turns out to be that. Nice illustrations at that site.
