I need battery cables for a 16.5 hp Briggs . I can't find a part number and I don't want to use cables to heavy . Can someone tell me what gauge wire I should use and the best place to purchase them . I have 6 gauge but they look to heavy . Thanks for your help you guys are always a great help.

Going heavier is better than lighter. If you feel 6 gauge is too heavy, drop down to 8 or 10. Any good auto supply store should be an able to make them up for you. Measure the old ones and add 2”, so you have room to work with.

Most MTD mower used a copper clad aluminum 8 grade. One of the worst battery cables out there. Upping to a 6 gauge strand copper cable is fine as long you properly crimp on the cable lugs.

BTW you would to buy a complete wiring harness from MTD @ $350 if you want factory cables (MTD 629-0939). It is for the LT-1850 as the LT1650 (MTD 929-0943) is NLA.
I think you can figure which to go with that is the better deal.

Now some place will list the 929-0943 for sale but according to my distributor it is NLA.
