After looking at other posts, this one: Tecumseh 17hp trouble cranking past compression started on 4/2 is almost identical. I don't have the tools, or knowledge to check anything for sure, but it is almost impossible to turn it (by hand) past the compression point also. After trying to start it just for 3 or 4 quick turns of the key and stopping when it hits the wall again, the wire connection to the starter now begins to smoke. A neighbor got it going last week after much messing with it, but he's gone for a couple of weeks and I need the mower ... or a herd of sheep....asap. He never would tell me what the problem was....maybe didn't know. He did not mention any smoking.

Does the starter connection smoking bring up other options, or would the ACR still be top of the list? This started gradually last summer.

Thank you for any help you can give. erta

Your valves are not working . Open it up and see if you have a broken spring or lobe . Your started will get ruined and the wire harness if you keep trying to start it .
