Bought a used SR-120 - Series 13 - 30" Snapper RER. Just got done with the first wave of repairs and what a difference! Still have noise in the rear though. I figured I would break down, inspect & rebuild the gear/chain cases over the winter. I just rebuilt the smooth clutch assy & installed new axle boots.

The drive disc pulley was broken and was able to weld and smooth it. Worked well. The drive disc is not like the old solid type but seems to work just fine and came off fairly  easy ... lol. Used never seize when re-assembling so next time ought be much easier.

Any suggestions for typical causes of noise? The boots were broken but was pretty clean inside as far as dirt and grit goes.

Some noise is probably normal in the drive system. You might check for excessive end play in the transmission. I'd also recommend using a synthetic lube in your newly inspected/rebuilt diff. My personal favorite is Amsoil, but YMMV.
