making a battery charger? questions

I bet if you trace the wire coming from the alternator you'll find it is broken or the connector has come off. Look at it this way, if your home brew charger works, and I think it will, you'll have a trickle/float charger for little or no money.

The worst that could happen is it burns up the transformer in the charging circuit or some other component. I doubt it will hurt the battery.

UPDATE:

Charger works great. Nothing gets hot while charging. I usually mow on Sunday, so I plug it in Saturday night and everything is fine. I extended the wires on the charger and put some alligator clips on there for easy connecting. This does exactly what I wanted it to do. Thanks everyone for your opinions!
