Lawnboy/toro transmission wont roll backwards

I was watching a youtube video where this person claimed that the wheels will not free wheel backwards due to metal and nylon shavings inside the trans gearbox.I have also noted that old grease will cause this also.both the transmissions on my L21zsn and my commercial 8480 still work as long as you are going forward.My question is this.Can I open up the gearbox and flush it out and repack with new grease?will this cure the backward free wheeling issues I am having?

It's worth a try. If that doesn't cure it you will likely find the issue when you crack the case open.

thanks for the reply I probally will find out after I check belt tension and cables.Just bought a 10332 dura force and that trans is perfect.of course the carb has the usual issues but for 30.00 I cant complain too much.
