Trying to figure out what went wrong with my mower. I was driving down the driveway last night about to mow and hit a stick. That could be a coincidence or not ... but right afterwards, I lost all drive power.

I towed mower back up driveway and put it the garage. The drive belt is still on, but is VERY loose. I am not sure if that is normal or not.

So I have a belt problem or the hydrostatic trans went out (I have heard those are the weak link in JD mowers).

I am going to have it checked out soon , but in the mean time:

When a hydro dies, does it just suddently die like that or go out over time?

Is a loose belt normal on the drive belt?

Just trying to figure out what is wrong and if I need to plan for a new mower.

Best guess?

Thanks!

I suspect the stick knocked the belt off of a pulley that you didn't see. Most drives belts will be tight in the operating position, meaning the clutch/brake released. Most hydro units don't have a way to disengage the drive belt so should be tight all the time. So I would be looking at the loose belt issue and go from there.
