how to shift a Poulan 6 speed???

yall didnt have a Poulan so ill post it here.

i have a fairly new Poulan 42in lawn mower with a standard 6 speed tranny.

the issue is its not like put it in a gear and go at that speed. i gota slide it past about 4th before any of the forward gears work, i dont realy feel any detent inbetween gears, once in revers i gota go way down to like 5th before i can go forward again.

so whats the deal is there a secret hand shake to make this work? and am i sapost to put in the clutch to shift like a car or not??

I have a Poulan with the six speed and all I do is at a full stop with the clutch/brake applied select the gear you want to go and then ease out the clutch/brake and you should start to move. You do know that the throttle has to stay wide open (not choked) on these models right? If this dose not work you might need the brake/clutch adjusted or the gear selector adjusted.
