my battery light is on and the battery keeps going dead checked at the voltage regulator and no voltage

However with the information you have posted we can not give any meaningful suggestions.

So lets start with the make & model number of the engine.
The colour of the wires you tested.
Where you tested them ie battery - to purple wire / red wire to ground.
Then what you were measuring AC ? DC ? Ohms ?
