Driving at night

I feel like ranting about something stupid for a minute, so don't mind me, lol.

Now that it's winter, I've been finding myself driving at night a lot more often.... And getting blinded by a**holes who forget how to turn their brights off.

My eyes are sensitive to light, so to me it's bad enough passing someone with low beams on. But when I'm passing someone with badly adjusted lights or with their high beams on......

GGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRAAAAHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

That's my rant of the day :)

You are not alone.
I ride vintage motorcycles and while they do not have brilliant headlights they are most times adequate.
Then some brainless selfish clueless idiot moron Bas? come up from behind, switches on his ultra bright 120W high beams + driving lights so while I am not blinded by oncoming lights I am riding in the total darkness of my own shadow and there is so much silly light my eyes adjust to their scrap light and my headlamp totally disappears. SO I just pull over & let the menstrual clots go past.
Every now & then they also stop thinking I am in trouble and when I ask the to go away so I can see the road again they generally get abusive and speed off in a blaze of light.
Only once did some one actually query why I had to stop so I put them on the bike with the lights on then their daughter turned the car lights on. She actually thanked me admitting that they turned up the lights so they could have a good look at the old bike.

An ex housemate who was a country boy got so sick of these idiots he put a really long tounge on his tow bar with a gun hook on the end in place of the ball.
So when some idiot comes up from behind blinding him he speed up a bit then slipped the foot of the gas and pulled on the hand brake,
He probably got rear ended 15 to 20 times then he insisted on calling the police so the idiot got a $ 600 neg driving fine, looses 4 points and has several thousand dollars of damage to the front of his car.
Often they had to get a recovery team to seperate the two vehicles and of course Mr Moron has to get Mrs Moron to come & pick him up while his car goes off to the shop.
the really funny one was getting rear ended by a senior barrister ( lawers to some ). he naturally took Mark to court and lost the case , then bumped it up to a higher court & lost again unable to accept his own moronic stupidity he took it to the highest state court, got a dressing down from the pannel of judges who refferred the matter back to the driving authorities with a recommendation that his licence get revoked forcing him to go all the way back to Learners plates so his now repaired Masaritti would have to stay in the garage for another 3 years

Is this going to a rant On.gif rant off.gif thread. I do know where your coming from though, I have the same problem at driving at night, my eyes are sensitive to the car lights. Since the Yankees are down here now driving isn't safe even during daylight hours.

No I haven't but I've considered them.

Another thing that I have noticed is that some fog lights (usually Jeeps) are so ****ing bright that I easily mistaken them for high beams, when they're not.

I have spent the bulk of my career driving ridiculous distances. Not so much any longer, but the memories of hundreds of thousands of miles still persist.

I drove at night probably 50 percent of the time. When I was younger, it did not bother me much. Now, it does. And, there seems to be a lot more people that just do not dim their brights when approaching. Others (I assume because of the poor economy and lack of maintenance) have one or two headlamps horribly misaligned, so that they shine right in your eyes regardless of high or low beam setting.

Over the decades, I've seen it all. I remember once driving through Atlanta around 3:00 AM to avoid heavy traffic, and some ignoramus stopped dead in front of me on I-75 to take a good look at the highway signs. I swerved to avoid him/her and a truck behind me was unable to do so and hit the car. That's just one example of the horrific driving I have witnessed over the years. Failure to dim high beam headlights is just the icing on the cake for me.

When gas hit $3.50 a gallon, I gave up on driving long distances and let the airlines ferry me around. Now that gas is back down, I may start road-warrior trips again.

Yea, I am sensitive to lights also. But, the higher you are the better (pick-up truck)

I remember when I had my Ranger with HID 6000K that were not aimed well. A lot of persons flashed me there high-beems thinking I was on the high-beems.

Since I have a new truck with an ARB guard I feel very tempted to push around the bad drivers. It would just be fun to ram the ones that have no idea how to drive. I always refrain from doing so.

It's a difficult task attempting to fix the stupid and arrogant people, but we can sometimes help our vision by keeping the interior of our windshields clean of a film known as vinyl off gassing. I've found water, the universal solvent, works about as well as anything.

I keep my windshield pretty clean.

I often clean the interior with a rag and Windex, and the exterior I tend to overuse my car's pisser fluid.

If there are two things that irritate me most about driving at night, it is people with blown headlamps and high beams.

I can sort of forgive the former as it is possible (although unlikely) that the bulb blew whilst driving and the driver is therefore either unaware or unable to do anything - but to not dip your lights is just pure idiocy.

People don't seem to realise that driving is a privilege, not a right. There are enough accidents on the roads at this time of year without bad drivers making matters worse.

My old jeep had overhead fogs.... A lot of them if someone didn't turn off their high beams I would flash then and temporarily blind them lol

I do maybe 90% of my driving in the dark. I have 55w HID lighting in my high beams in addition to the 35w HID lows and have run a couple of area 'non dimming' rednecks in the ditch. I don't flash if they forget to dim, I just turn on and leave on.

Guy I know drives a Ford Fusion. High beams on that car are so damn bright it's like you're staring at the sun.

He does the same thing when someone is stupid enough to leave them on. He just flips his brights back on and leaves them on unless they shut theirs off.

I Haven't drove for several years at night time now because of cataracts. I will be have surgery this year on them. Yes it isn't very pleasant when someone doesn't dim there lights at night, but I ways dim mine and it didn't upset me. What I am seeing here is very aggressive, childish, and very dangers driving. Its people like this that causes accidents. I am sure you a adults and know better then this. You are talking like a bunch of teen agers, but should know better.

I don't want to offend anyone here, but what I was reading didn't make a lick of sense, driving record has nothing to do with this. How in the world can blinding a on coming car be a safe driver??? Getting mad only makes for a aggressive person. I am sure you know what I mean here with a lot of horn blown and finger showing. Here in NY there is a law against aggressive driving.

OK just why do you feel that way. Do you run your every day life like that or just when you are behind a steering wheel??? Why in the world are you mad at the world when you are driving it just doesn't make any sense. No one is perfect and mistakes are made even driving a car and being mad at other drivers only makes for a lot of danger. Nothing worst then two hard heads going at each other driving down the road.

Do you run your lawn business like that to. Sound to me like you got problems. Very glad I personally don't know you because you must be perfect at what ever you do, very proud of it and let everyone know so. You will find normal people do make mistakes and that is called being human. I will make a suggestion that you sit back and enjoy life a little better and not worry what the stupid people do. Now when I think of stupid driving is something like drinking, drugs, texting and thing of that nature and then drive.

:) stuff like failing to merge properly and stopping on a busy on ramp till there is enough room for them to get on the highway.

Zipping through traffic weaving between cars just to stop at the next stop light 2 cars ahead of time

Speeding 10-15 mph over speed limit.

Failing to own proper tires for the winter season

Driving slow in the fast lane.

I could go on. No I'm not perfect but stuff like above I dont do and if I do something wrong I try to change it

Yes I see the list. to avoid drivers like that you need to be a defensive not get in back of them and blowing your horn and giving them the finger. That makes you no better then them. If you really want to get into defensive driving ride a motorcycle. Then you have to watch out for the drivers that don't see you on top of your list. Like someone pulling out of their driveway like you are not there, but you are and going the speed limit.

There are some drivers out there without a chip on there shoulder, you sound like one. Just plain manners, I don't know why but for some reason when some people get behind the steering wheel they are mad at the world. I find that's not true here in the US. I got 5 bikes and find insurance is a lot less then a car. Yes you have to think when you ride on the roads and I hear the dangerous word all the time but just don't see it any more dangerous then driving a car. Yes you do see a lot of motorcycle accidents but read between the lines, speed, crazy style riding, drugs and alcohol. You are on two wheel so you have to use your head. You ever been on a expressway and see a motorcycle going twice the speed limit going in and out of traffic, now what dose that tell you. dangerous. If you want to ride a bike take a safety course first, Once you start riding it get in your blood and you will love it. go for it

I think the thing that amazes me is there's no way around the High beam thing, it's kinda a catch 22. Driving at night is something I did for years and you need high beams especially on the back roads and such. I mean with all the technology today you would think they could come up with a solution. They make cars that can park themselves without driver asst, you think they could do something about lights.

Yea, by dangerous I talk about the bad drivers. You have to be alert when on a motorcycle. Yea, I've seen a few bikes on the highway do wheelies. I've also seen Ghost Rider's insane videos of doind a wheeli a 300 km/h, running away from police, etc.

Insuranc for bikes is about 2K-5K/year if I am correct. For a car it is about 500$-700$/year. Less then that when you are older.

What a different in the two country's. I have two off road bikes, two on road scooters, one full size Harley Davidson on road motorcycle all with license plates and proper insurance. The insurance is just a little over 100 dollars. Something just doesn't sound right here. Have you shopped around for motorcycle insurance or are you trying to insure one of the high speed Japanese bikes that go 200 MPH. Just get a sensible road bike and there are insurance company that specialize in motorcycles and it might surprise you what it cost. Never tried it and don't plan on it but I don't think my bike would have any problem to go over 100 MPH.

Insurance are cheap for older people. Men in ther 20's get hit hard if they have a sporty car or motorcycle. I havn't shopped around much. I just hear about it. My friend that had on 08 Ranger who was about 23 years old was paying 1200$/year in insurance. That is for a pickup truck. If I had a luxury vehicule that is rather new (Merc, Audi, BMW, etc.), I would be paying a good 1500$-2000$.

For men in their 20's and the kids fresh out of school it's almost impossible without parents helping to get affordable insurance especially on a sporty car or motorcycle say nothing about getting insurance on one of those crotch rockets. Most parents end up with their kids on there policy's.

Yes buy your teenager a crotch rockets and after he gets killed on it cry how dangerous motorcycles are or buy them a nice 250CC bike so they can learn how to ride the right way. I also did away with my American made car and went Japanese, now that I have had it a few years I miss my Chevrolets and when I do buy my next car it will be American. The biggest complaint I would have with a BMW is if it ever needed repairs, BIG MONEY.

It may cost you if you keep it long enough to go out Of Warranty but with the 4 year service program it's highly unlikely that will happen because I don't keep cars that long.

Yes, insurance are not cheap if you are youg male. You have to be in your parents' policy.
For Americain vehicules, I drive a Chevy 1500. I love it. Before that I had a Ranger. Liked it too, but I hated the crappy steering/suspension components. Always something loose no matter what.

BMW are very expensive to fix that is for sure, but they last a very long time. Even with that said, any other car can last as long or even longuer than a BMW. The key is maintenance. Just like a mower. But there is something about a BMW. They drive so nice and smooth. And that sound of the old ones is just awsome.

The thing is everyone says or talks about the expense in fixing the BMW and in reality it's no more expensive to fix than any other car that you buy in today's market. Really if you own a car today and it's not under a service policy regardless of make you can't afford to take it to a dealer and have it fixed. There labor rates alone can kill you say nothing about what they charge for parts.

This is one of the reasons I do my own repairs. Lawn mower, motorcycles, or cars. That also gives a opportunity to shop for parts prices. You fix your own lawn mow why not your own car? Service policy is a big waste of money, repair it yourself. I though that most people on this forum has a complete repair shop with all the latest in tools.

I agree with the fact that the labor rates at the BMW dealer is outrageous!

But I dissagree with the rest! Parts for BMW are expensive.

Such a nice like that like that BMW why would you trust anybody but your own pride and labor to repair it? I have worked for dealers and know what go's on and a dealer will never work on a car of mine, much less a car like a BMW. The only reason my cars go to a repair shop is for NYS inspection because I have to. I even change my own tires. Another thing you will find is a person that can afford a car like that doesn't get grease under their finger nails.

The service policy comes with the car when you buy whether you want it or not your paying for it. The normal person today can't work on a vehicle because they don't have the tools required to do the work. My lawn mowers aren't a computerized engine like a car and I don't do my work on lawn mowers engine other than changing filters and oil, I take it to the shop because there under a warranty or service policy and it cost me nothing.

Whether the parts are more expensive or not is really irrelevant if there not costing you anything, and don't think you'll get away from Ford or Chevy without it costing a ton of money just like any manufacturer. Really when you think about it, and for an example my 2006 F150, I drove that truck for seven years and never had an issue and my Grandson is still driving it and there has never been a repair bill on the thing. Really how many repair bills do you run into on the new autos today. My point is if you have a relatively new car and it's run out of warranty it's going to cost big money to get it fixed regardless of who makes it.

Well a car needs general maintenance. That is not too expensive. All tho, the older it gets, the more expensive it gets (ball joints, shocks, gaskets, etc.). I don't drive a new truck.

Its funny you said this, yesterday I replaced my buddys alternator on his 2005 land rover. After disassembling the vehicle to get access to the parts I needed(4 decrotive plastic covers, part of air box, fan shroud, fan, couple electrical connections) for idler pulley. And wheel, wheel well liner, a second plastic access point, skid plate) I got the best yet limited access got it replaced put the car back together. I had to trick the computer to accept the new alt. Then unplug the suspension fuse to unlock the suspension so I can drive level. I had to rent a special tool for the fan. This is a basic repair. Couldn't imagine trying to fix something more in depth in these modern clostrophobic engines

I replaced a newer bmw serpentine belt once.... Took a few hours was ridiculous

Yeah it is ridiculous that's the reason I let the guys at Ford take care of my stuff and keep my vehicles under warranty. You did all that to replace an alternator and how long did it take? Multiple your time/hours by $80 plus parts for a dealer to do the job out of warranty. The days of the shade tree mechanic are numbered.

3.5 hrs so not terribly long but still. I could Chang the alt in my jeep in 30 mins

I love how this became a BMW thread.

I know nothing about that car. I just have my 96 Taurus

@Exotion: that is bad! I am glad to have an older truck. Cars are now rolling computers.

I still let a shop take care of my truck. I don't always have time nor the room since my truck is too long for the garage. He charges 50$/hour and is very good.

Try all that with one working eye and short sighted in the other x full beams... not a good combo .....night time driving is no no for me if at all possible!

Just did a long night drive from 3 AM to 7 AM in total darkness and no moon. Some heavy fog and some Ice Fog. Luckily, I made it without any incident.

The things that are critical we all know. Clean headlights, clear windshield, decent wipers, good defroster (in winter), washing fluid, and COFFEE to keep you awake. ;)

Luckily, my car has headlamp squirters that engage when you have the headlights on and you hit the windshield washers. My wipers are new and I cleaned the inside of the windshield with Windex the night before. Sometimes you get a film on the inside that you can't see during daylight but it comes out and haunts you at night. My car also has HID (High Intensity Discharge) Xenon headlamps so it's very good at night even with low beams. I did run the FOG lamps this trip as I needed them in parts of the drive.

Did not see any Deer this trip. Usually in the wee hours of the night when morning is approaching, you can spot deer near the highway. Not this time.

I am not a fan of HID Xenon lamps coming toward you. But I have to say, if you have a car with them and do a lot of night driving, they are great. You don't feel the need (or at least I don't feel the need) to engage high beams with Xenon lamps. But... they are EXPENSIVE to replace. I had a scare last year when one failed and the quote for a new one shocked me. But... it suddenly started working again and has been working ever since. Crossing my fingers and my wallet.

You got that one right. HID are nice! But, not for others. I get mine for cheap. All tho, they are not OEM. Just some cheap China bulbs on Ebay.
