Dipstick for trans oil? Sreeching when working hard?

I have a Scott's S 2348, which is, I think a Deere GT275; 23HP Kohler, 48 cut.

Is there a dipstick or other way of determining right level? Under the seat is cap with a 3" plug of foam under that; then channel narrows but where should fluid be? Up to bottom of plug? Deere shop said it is a special high quality 5W30 fluid that trans takes, but I could get away with a high quality 5W30 oil in a pinch. My level is well below 'bottleneck', but trans seems to work OK. Thoughts?

Also, when cutting thick grass something screeches bad, and it will subside when load is less. Could this be belt pulley needing lube? Worn out belt (seems fair condition)?
Or something else?

Many Thanks
