I own this mower and my kids wired the governor wide open . The machine quite. I got it to restart but have to manually hold the governor open to allow unit to run. Is the governor plastic gear ? What is the normal failure of this type with a run away motor. Its run great but I wounld love to fix it properly. Thanks and advice will come in handy. Its has a brigg and straton 6.5 motor.

Welcome to LMF...
Yes it is plastic... & internal.
The normal failure is it destroys itself, from over revving, and a part comes through the block...
Even if they were lucky and it didn't fly apart while they were doing this... it surely has severely stressed the rod, crank and piston...

Was the governor working before they bypassed it?
Is there any indication that the governor lever is getting any push from the inside of the engine??
