Runs very rough on start; auto choke air vane has to be moved manually to get smooth rpm
Could thermostat need replacing? It ran fine before I tuned up carb. I had both choke and
throttle plates out--maybe not put back in correctly

Don't feel the thermostat needs replacing, sounds like something is binding. Remove the carb and make sure the choke shaft moves freely. When reassembling, constantly check that everything moves freely. Did you remove the shroud and see if the air vane arm and thermostat arm are mounted correctly? Air vane arm may be on the wrong side, not pushing the chock open on start up.

Did you fit the spring from the air vane to metal lug under inlet manifold?
