I am working on a Craftsman LT1000 and the motor won't start. I determined that the old starter was bad, so I replaced it. Now the engine won't spin, it just makes a squeal sound. If I reverse the flywheel by hand a little, the starter will spin it for about a revolution, but then it almost sounds like it is hitting something and it abruptly stops. I adjusted the valves to the proper setting, but it still won't turn over. Does anyone know what is happening? It is a 18hp Briggs OHV Intek engine. Thanks

Take the valve cover back off and turn the flywheel by hand and watch the valves. On the intake stroke you will see the intake valve bump slightly. If it is not bumping off then the compression release is not working and will need to replace the camshaft.

Ok I figured out what the problem was. I incorrectly adjusted the valves the first time. Now I redid it with the piston 1/4 from TDC and it fires right up. Thanks
