    Deer eating Fir Trees

For the past 2 weeks, the deer have been invading our yard, eating my fir trees. They leave the spruces alone, but are destroying the fir. Man, I wish it were hunting season.

    Spring Tune Up

Will your mower get its spring tune-up while the snow is still on the ground or will you wait for the grass to start growing again? Do you take it somewhere or do you get it ready for the season yourself?

    One handed action

My snow blower (a Yard King) has "one-handed action", where I'm supposed to be able to let go of either lever and both will stay down. This used to work fine, but now it only works if I do the lever for the auger first, then the lever for the drive wheels. When I do it in this order, I can let...

    Wisteria

We have a wisteria growing up the side of the garage, and it looking for somewhere to go from there. It's starting to wrap around the gutter and doesn't seem to want to climb over the roof. I think it might want to come out, away from the house, but the lawn slopes away starting about 3 feet...

    Ladybugs

One warm day and my south-facing windowsills are full of ladybugs. Where did they all come from? Where have they been all this time? They must hibernate, but have they been in my window frames all this time???

    Why bother?

Cleared out the driveway, with the help of the boys. Put away the snowblower. Went inside. Started the fire. Walked out to the driveway. It was already blown shut with snow.

    Please, no rain!

It is gradually warming up this week, allowing the snow to slowly melt into the ground. This is good. Now they are calling for rain, which will cause the snow to melt quickly, overflowing the streams and flooding yards and fields. This is not good.

    Residential Wind Turbines

Anyone know anything about residential wind turbines? We've been approached about putting one on our property - a 5 KW turbine which should generate enough for our use plus extra which would go into the grid, and for which we would receive a check from the electric company. We would only use...

    Cup Holder

Everything else in the world has cup holders, why not a lawn mower? (except for the obvious problem of grass clippings in my Pepsi.) I'm thinking of a suction cup attachment beside me on the wheel cover. Think it would hold? Any better ideas? And no, I will not consider one of those college...

    Sledding - What a Drag!

We had a new 6" of snow (on top of the foot or so of the old stuff) and the boys wanted to get out their ATVs. I used my big ATV and built myself a drag - a full sheet of plywood, eye hooks, chain, zip ties. Hooked the plywood behind the ATV and started dragging it in a path around the yard to...

    Oldie but a Goodie...

Break out your best small engine joke. Here's one to get us started... So this guy takes his new chain saw back to the store and says "This thing's a piece of crap. You said it would cut three or more cords a day but it takes me forever to get through one." The store employee pulls the...

    Wishing for Rear Wheel Drive...

It's just not as much fun driving on unplowed roads and snowy parking lots with front wheel drive. So much harder to do donuts and skids and slides and all those fun things that the kids love and the wife hates...

    Wedges

Do you sharpen your wedges or simply replace them? Mine get pretty heavy use, and many are worn down to where they now have quite the rounded edge.

    Car Muck in the Garage

All winter my garage is full of car muck. You know, the stuff that falls off the tires and mudflaps and fenders after having driven in the snow. My way to get rid of it is to dump shovelfuls of show on it, spread it around, then shovel/squeegee out the whole mess. How do you do it?

    Quirky Relatives

JD - Your comment here reminds me of my brother-in-law, before he mellowed out in his middle age. He used to be freakish about conversational gaps. We would all be sitting around, chatting. If a moment passed in which no one spoke for all of, say three & a half seconds, he would jump up and...

    Driveway Material

I poured my own concrete driveway, one square at a time. It was cheaper and more fun than asphalt, plus the kids can play on it in the summer without complaining of hot feet. This time of year I could really truly trade it in. The light color does not absorb the sunlight well, so it does not...

    US Postal Service Scolding

We were scolded by the US Postal service. When the plow goes by, it scoops the snow up against our mailbox, and we just leave it there. Enough has built up that the mailman (excuse me, our postal carrier) can't reach the box from his truck. Instead of our mail, we received a note (he did...

Trimmers - Gas, Electric or Battery?

So, what does everyone prefer for their string trimming needs: Gas, electric, or battery? I've also seen some with optional blade attachments, but I'm afraid I may cut off my foot at the ankle. Thoughts?

    Lottery Winnings

The Mega Millions lottery game is up to $200 million. If we won the jackpot (yeah, right) I say it's better to go for the lump sum. My wife says it's better to go for the 20 years of payments. Which would you go for?

    Whiteout

I was driving home today and passed a golf course. With no trees of any sort, the wind was whipping snow across the course, whiting out the road. Cars were in the ditch, slamming on their brakes and generally having a miserable time. Remind me to stay home on windy winter days.

    Propane Tank

We have always had a buried propane tank but are now switching to above ground. They said they need to put in two 100-gallon tanks, up against the house. Does anyone have experience with this? We have about three weeks to figure out where these things are going to go.

    Grrrrrrrrrr

I came home from my trip last night to find, surprisingly, the road neatly plowed. (A rare occurrence in my rural area.) Then I found the new guy who just moved in down the road over the summer plowing his driveway. He was on a little tractor thing with a plow attachment in the front...

    Sweet Gum

While on my trip I have discovered a most horrible tree: the Sweet Gum. I'm told that it gives wonderful shade in the summer, but right now there are sticky, spiky, hard, evil gum balls everywhere - yards, driveways, roads, gutters, sidewalks. After seeing these I will never ever have this...

    Farewell old Friend

My father-in-law's Gravely finally bit the dust. He bought it used back in 1967, and it was a faithful workhorse for him. They moved it across the country when they retired, and continued to use it on his farm. The last remaining Gravely repair person in the county retired, and Dad did the...

    Shovel -vs- Snowblower

There was about 8" of snow on the driveway, but it was the light and fluffy stuff, so I just used the shovel. If it had been the thick and sloppy I would have used the snowblower for that much.

    Chain Sharpening

Does anyone out there sharpen their own chain saw chains? I have always taken mine to the shop. I saw a do-it-yourself sharpening kit at the store and wondered whether it would work, or if it would just be a hassle.

    Storing your Mower

What do you to get your mower ready for winter storage? I always scrape the deck, and change the oil. Sometimes I'll sharpen the blades, but that usually waits for spring.

    Alternate uses for Leaf Blowers

About the best use I ever saw for a leaf blower was when I was camping with my son. It was a cub scout event where we got to tent camp on the outfield of a local minor league baseball field. The next morning they woke us all up at 6:30 am by using about a gajillion leaf blowers to blow all...

    Lawn Mower Video Games

What is your favorite video game that features lawn mowers? My personal favorite is Plants -vs- Zombies. You are a homeowner protecting your home from zombies by planting your yard full of plants such as pea shooters, which shoot peas, and squash, which jump up and squash them. If all of your...

    Huskee Wood Splitters

Has anyone used a Huskee firewood splitter? They look like they would do a good job, but they also look pretty dangerous. Right now I split all of my firewood by hand - mostly oak and maple, with a bit of apple and cherry.

    On the Y Chromosome

I am convinced that the gene for backing up is on the Y chromosome. I can do it. My dad can do it. Even my 12-year-old son can do it. My wife can barely back her van up the driveway, much less an ATV with a trailer hitched behind.

Benefit to Blowing or Waste of Gas?

It's a lot of fun to blow the leaves away, but it makes me wonder if I'm begin environmentally naughty. Is there any benefit to blowing that would counter my using up gas for something I could be doing by hand?

    Have you had snow yet?

We woke up one morning to a white lawn, but the roads and driveway were clear. We usually don't need to break out the snow blower until late December.

What do you do while you mow?

So, while you are going back and forth, back and forth (or round and round and round), what are you thinking about? Do you sing? Plan your day? Admire the green grass? My wife sings. I just sort of zone out.

    What's the going rate?

Just wondering whether I'm paying my kids a fair wage when they mow my lawn. It probably ends up around 2-1/2 acres when you piece together the areas that we mow, allowing for landscaping, driveway, shed, gardens, and other things that get in the way of nice easy measurements. I generally pay...

    Standing Mower

I saw a man mowing his lawn standing up. There was no seat to his mower - he just stood on the mowing platform and held onto handlebars to steer it. I almost crashed my car for watching him! Has anyone ever tried such a thing? Is it as fun as it looks? It looked like it might be...

    Selling a Used Mower

How do you prefer to sell your used mowers? I have one brush cutter that still works, plus a lawn mower that's having trouble. Clover

Clover is taking over my yard. Should I Weed-n-Feed yet this fall, or wait till spring? We have already had killing frosts, but the days are still warm enough that the grass is growing. I'll need to mow again for at least 3 more weeks.

    Placement of Snow Fence

Our first winter in the snowy north we thought we were supposed to place our snow fence along the driveway. BIG MISTAKE! The wind would blow the snow up level with the fence, and we shoveled more that year than any other. Anyone have any tips for snow fencing?

    Discharge chute won't stay down

The discharge chute on my snowblower will not stay down. I crank it down and after a minute or so of use it has worked its way back up. Right now I'm using a bungy cord to hold it down but that makes it hard to change. Any thoughts?
