    Chainsaw Surprise

I have worked on small engines for over 50 years and still learn something everyday:wink: I needed a small trimming saw and I found an MS192T on eBay at a decent price. Normally I buy tools new but have got some really good deals from Pawn Shops and eBay. While searching for a Stihl 200T--what I...

    Lawn Mower tire mounting

I bought a set of 23 x 8.50-12 lawn tractor tires off eBay. When I received them, dismounting and mounting instructions were included. Instructions--- All rims are desighened to have the tire removed and replaced from either the inside or outside of the rim. Before mounting the tire, be sure the...

    Oil Change?????????????

Just returned from checking out a diesel lawn tractor with 60" mowing deck. Owner stated he bought it new and it was about five years old. Factory paint was not even broken around the oil drain plug and the oil filter was covered with app. 1/8" of dirt and grass clippings:mad::thumbdown...

Words of advise about small engines

This is only my personal opinion based on small engine repair over many years.? When purchasing a Leaf Blower, or String Trimmer, just to name two?notice where the starting cord is located. Many lower priced units have crank bearings on one side of the crank. The other end can have the...

Valuable lesson learned about Silicone Caulk

I have a bathroom in my barn/shop and the vent pipe had a small leak with a few drips coming down. I have used MANY tubes of Silicone Caulk, over the years, and I am aware of the "shelf life" In the past I found that even an unopened tube will set up after so long, so I had a tube that was soft...

    New Tires

About two years ago, I checked with ChinaMart for 23x8.50-12 tires for my Wheel Horse. Could not believe they wanted close to $70 EACH:thumbdown: I was at a local tire company, later, and the owner checked his price. He ordered two and included mounting for just over $100. Fast forward...

    Some repairs are just unbelievable

My father-in -law went to a nursing home and he gave me his Honda V45 Motorcycle. The bike had not been ridden in quite some time and did not run worth a crap! I am not new to motorcycles and I have cleaned many carburetors, but these, and the V65, are very complicated, especially concerning...

Laughed Until I Cried--Wish I Had Been There

My brother bought a Grevely convertable tractor (two wheel) and a 36"? front mounted mower. He then decided he needed to ride so he found a sulky that hitched to the rear. He was very happy, for a short time, and got a lot of grass and weeds cut. I went over to his house and he was walking...

    Gator Blades

I have a Gravely G16 mower with bagger system. First I would like to make it clear that this is not a slam against Gator Blades--just my experience. I have been bagging with the factory original style blades. I bought a set of Gator Blades and gave them a try. It appeared that the New Gator...

    What Do People Think

Years ago, I ran a small engine repair shop. Today, I still occasionally do repairs and I have noticed thangs haven't changed much. The vast majority of engine failures were---are-- oil related. I have seen quality machines, 5 or 6 years oil, with paint still on the drain plug!!! Mower deck...

    Adjusting Valves

I read about a lot of people adjusting valves. Over the years, I have only had a few small engines that had adjustable valves. Today--I have a 1982 Wheel Horse with twin 17.5, and an old Gravely G16 twin. Neither has adjustable valves. Years ago, I had a 16 HP B&S cast iron single that I rebuilt...

    What oil to use?

I recently bought a Gravely G16 with 325 hours. PO stated he used Mobil 1 full synthetic since new. I would normally use petrolum based oil like Straight HD 30W, but in this case, I will not change to regular oil. Since Kohler doesn't even recommend synthetic, I am wondering what weight is used...
