When starting i get a bad kick back from pull starting GX200 what causes this?

On a John Deere rider with a Kohler engine it starts but gas starts coming out of exhaust bolwing white smoke then dies.

Oil leak under engine, Dealer said it's the main seal you have to take hole engine out and replace main seal and drip pan gasket. any body done this is it a big job?
