I have a craftsman 1700 lawn tractor , ran fine when parked ,key was not completly shut off , battery dead , recharged battery, now engine will just crank 1/4 to 1/2 turn with plug installed , but will crank just fine with plug removed , check for stuck valve , both are moving

Battery is probably cactus
Try jumping off your car / truck battery, engine not running so the starter is only getting battery voltage
If you can pop a volt meter across the battery terminals and see how much voltage drop you get when the engine is cranking
IF it goes under 11V the battery is now toast .
You can confirm this by taking it to an auto parts shop.
Most will pop it on a carbon pile load tester and give you the bad news

OK
1 down 10 to go
Run jumpers from the battery directly to the starter
I find it works best to hook the - to the oil drain plug & the + to the starter motor then hook them to the battery
If the engine cranks fine then try using the key with only the - lead connected

Let us know what happens
