I was recently given what looks like an older Snapper Zero Turn Mower that is is really good shape. It will start up and run but the Head is cracked and smokes to beat the band. I was just wondering if anyone has ever had success changing a head or should I just invest in a whole new motor. Keep in mind the mower was free so I don't mind putting $500 bucks into a new motor to have a nice little rider around the house. Also the motor is an 18.5/500cc Briggs and Stratton which I have looked for but cannot find. Are these motors interchangeable with another Briggs? If so, which model?

Most briggs engines are interchangeable, as well as other engines with same crankshaft length or diameter, but will require more work. Lets start with the model type and code of your engine so we can see what you are working on. What do you mean the head is cracked. better description would also assist us in helping you. On the single cylinder Briggs OHV engines is it common to blow the head gasket between the push rod cavity and the cylinder which will cause cause smoking issues. Or is your problem the valve cover leaking and dripping on the muffler causing smoke.

The guy who gave it to me said the head was cracked and oil is dripping out of the exhaust. I would assume the head is toast. The Code stamped on the motor is 31Q777 0120 B1 090929ZD.

I believe I have found a replacement Briggs with the same shaft size. So it looks like the 31R977 series will work...I hope.
