Recently bought Simplicity Landlord Hydro 18. The seller had apparently done a lot of work, incl new carb.
It was loud & seller said needed muffler. Replaced muffler but it wasn't that bad, noise was coming from exhaust. Replaced missing bolts & gaskets where exhaust connects to motor.
Problem now is muffler gets red hot. Is it safe to run ?

There is red and there is Red
If the entire exhaust pipe and muffler is bright red then you have a problem
If the muffler is dull read just where the loose exhaust pipe goes into it but the pipe is not red then that is normal & from unburned fuel burning inside the muffler.
If the PO has been running it for a long time with a loose exhaust pipe then he could have burned the end of the exhaust valve
Unless you are mowing for hours on end you are not likley to damage it any worse than it already is.

Start with the easy bits.
Remove the flywheel retaining nut/bolt and check that the 2 sides of the timing key slot come together to make a perfect square
Remove the rocker covers and adjust the valve lash
Running with a tight exhaust valve lash will open the exhaust valve too early
