I have a sears tractor with a 16hp engine model 310707 and it is blowing smoke all over the place out the exhaust. I pulled the air cleaner off and i am getting a lot of oil from the breather blowing up into the air filter and then down the carburator. I pulled the breather off and it looks fine. Is it i just need a new breather or am in looking at a head gasket or something like that. Could i just make a plate and block the breather off? SOmeone help. I have a bunch of lawns to do but no mower. Hope its a quick fix. I really hate spending money if i dont have to.

WELCOME to these Forums....
Check the oil level & quality... it sounds like you may have gasoline diluting the engine oil.
Stuck carb needle and seat or float problem.
Do NOT remove the crank case vent system.
If your problem is a 'sometimes' leaking fuel issue, you can solve that with an inline fuel shut off valve. :smile:KennyV

Well i checked the oil level yesterday when it started doing this, it was low. So yesterday i did an oil change. I only got out about 3/4 of a quart. I changed it with new fresh oil and filled it till it reached the fill line on the dipstick. But it still does it. I dont see how gas can be getting into the oil. I can clearly see that alot of oil is comming up the breather tube and then down the air filter box and through the filter. I ran it today without a filter to see how much oil is going down the carb and it flow pretty good. If it was a carb issues wouldnt it not start or stay running? It fires up on the 1st crank of the key and idles smooth. That is until the oil pressure builds up and the oil starts flowing down the carb. Then it starts to stumble and smoke starts flowing out the exhaust.
Could the breather just be bad?

Did you read the post Kohler engine spewing liquid out of breather ? It sound like the same problem you have.
