Well which electrical system do you have? Most likely it is related to the seat switch.

LT133/LT155 w/ 3 AMP SYSTEM, LT133/LT155 w/ 15 AMP SYSTEM, or the 4 POSITION KEY SWITCH
[yelling just a cut and paste from the service manual]

If it were the seat switch, the engine would cut off when you tried to put it in gear. So we can rule that out. Does it stall out due to lack of power, or does it turn off immediately as if you turned the key off?

I did not assume the op had been using the motion drive, just trying to engage the deck while parked.

No worries! On that machine, if the seat switch is bad, as soon as you let off the brake pedal, the engine will cut off, even if you're in neutral. The only switch that overrides the seat switch is the parking brake switch, which allows the operator to leave the seat and keep the engine running. On older models, such as the STX38 and some rear engine models, you could just put the trans in neutral and get off the seat without having to set the parking brake. Hope this helps!
