I just joined, so this is my first post. We live on 7.5 acres in central Virginia. I've got a nice John Deere self propelled mower (actually a re-badged Snapper), and a New Holland tractor with a brush hog, but for serious mowing I use a European scythe with a 28-inch grass blade. It gets where a tractor or mower cannot go, cuts hay and leaves it in nice windrows, gives me a great aerobic workout, takes care of "love-handles", and runs on breakfast.

Long ago when I ran one of those, It consumed breakfast, lunch & dinner (we called it supper then)... Still have them around but have not started them in decades... Don't think I could anymore...

Don't those that run off of our L4200 PTOs now?

I just bought a scythe from a neighbor.

I thought I could sharpen it fine with a file, but that doesn't seem to be doing the job. So I have a peening jig on order.

Any scythe users on this forum? I'd be glad for any tips.

I'm figuring on using it much like a string trimmer.
