Mountfield honda 5.5 gcv160 stalls when engaging drive

Hi all,
I have a Mountfield honda 5.5 gcv160 lawnmower, it has a bar you engage on the handle bar to engage the gear so you dont need to push it, it can be used also without the aid of the gear box too,
the problem i have is when i engage the gear if i put it under too much drive pressure (up a very small hill) it stalls the engine, if when it starts to stall i release the gear lever then it idles fin and will still cut?

Any ideas?

Clean underside of deck & blade & see if that helps.

You will need complete numbers from carburetor, they are relatively inexpensive & don't forget gaskets. Let us know how it goes, thanks, Mark

Hi Mark, i stripped the guts out of it and its clean as a whistle, just stripped the carb down and all looks good, and also a new spark plug,
im thinking of adjusting the carb but with the airfilter attached and integral to the carb mounting its almost impossible to accesss the adjustment screws?
