John Deere air purge question

I recently picked up an LX277 from a guy who said the transmission needed to be replaced. He claimed he had not done anything to it at all, it just stopped going in forward and reverse. I followed the procedure to purge the air from the K62A transmission and it ran like new.

So, what causes air to get in the transmission? Was this guy lying? Did he have to do something for that to happen or is it possible that there is a part that has failed or is failing and might cause this to happen again?
