Well, my comment is this:

Even though you can be scientific in planning to do A, you will run across B-Z in messing around with trying to get A to work. Edison didin't spend his time messin around with formulas behind a desk.....he futzed with stuff till he got it right. (And, as I said, came across many OTHER patents in the quest to make his idea work)

I have immense respect for Edison, and those of our ilk. Hands-on can show you stuff the formulas won't. It may kill you in the process, but that is the price....

I fall somewhere in the middle on this. All planning and no trying obviously gets you nowhere. All trying and no planning seems counter-productive. The best amount of each will depend on the application, I suppose.
