I was told that manufacturers that sell riding lawnmowers in the big box stores use a different spec. engine in those products as is used in products going out to dealers in lawn equipment . Is this true ?

Not true. Residential engines are different than commercial. Dealers sell both residential and commercial mowers. The Hustler, Toro, Cub Cadet, and John Deere at the big box stores are the same mowers that the dealers sell. However, you won’t be getting an estate mower or commercial mower from a big box store.

I usually recommend Dealer over big box store as i believe you get better service WHEN it breaks down or you need service questions answered.

It depends upon the brand of the mower
If the model numbers on the ID tag are the same then they are exactly the same
If the model numbers are different then they mowers are a downgraded version
The 100 series JS's are identical to the ones in the JD shop built down to a price so the dealer can get you in there and sell you a much better mower, & hopefully the model suited to your lawns & needs
