My grandson was looking at some old gas engines today and the person who had the old engines had what he called a hover mower. I brought it up on you tube and they do make such a thing and it looks like it works. This mower has no wheels but hovers. Has anyone ever used one or seen one in action. I just can't see where you would get a very even cut with it.

I saw some on a golf course a few years ago had weed eater line on it they use them for hills you stand at the top of the hill and swing it back and forth Don't know how good they would work cutting a yard like you would with a push mower

The ones I've seen date from the '70s, I think, and they were branded "Fly-mo". I firmly believe that the quality of the cut would suffer as a result of the grass being flattened from the airstream being used to support the mower.:confused2::eek:

They use them on the golf course here, there designed to cut on steep slopes, wet grounds, lake banks, sand traps, retaining walls etc. Flymo, Bosch, Honda, Allen, Husqvarna all have them. I believe the electric ones use weed eater line and the gas powered stainless steel blades. The big problem I see is the cost involved, They start at $600 and go up.

Over here in the UK there is a brand called "Flymo" who make hover mowers.

I've had two electric Flymo hover mowers, and they are quite good.

I had one tiny one without grass collection, and one big cumbersome one with grass collection, and I would recommend the one without grass collection, as it was light, small, and worked well.

The one with grass collection... Well, it doesn't hover that well to be honest, due to the weight and size.

You can get some gas hover mowers made by Flymo which were made in the 1960's and 1970's, but they are quite rare these days due to the fact I think they were made illegal after only a short production life.

They do cut fairly even but they are no good if you are the type that likes strainght lines in your yard as they have a tendecy to vear to one side or the other if your lawn is not perfectly flat, used one for all 5 years I lived in england.
