for letting me join the group. This is my first Cub mower. I've been tinkering
with riders of different makes for many years.

Well the
very first thing you should do is hit the edit post button in the bottom right corner.
Delete all of the text in your post above and write
"Double post see the Cub Cadet section"
That way you are going to avoid a lot of confusion because people will not know which thread they posted on.

After you delete the double post,
go to the Cub cadet web site and download the owners, service & parts manual for your mower . You will need the numbers from the ID tag under the seat to ensure you get the right one.

Deleted cause this bit was wrong, silly me

Dissengage the transmission ( see owners manual ) and try to push the mower.
If it rolls back & forth a few feet without a wheel locking up then the brake is not locked on.
Now re-engage the transmission, it should be a lot lot harder to move in both directions and stop the instant you stop pushing.
If it rolls with very little resistance then the tranny could be gone.

Get back to us with the results

Bert are you sure you're thinking of the 2140? I've got one and there is no belt in the drive system. Mine is a 2140 AGS which is a six speed gear transmission with forward and reverse pedals. They made a hydrostat drive model, too, but I believe it was called a 2145.

Yes, brain fart they have a drive shaft & eatons box not a drive belt.
Will try to delete the incorrect info.
Thanks for spotting my mistake.
