Ran my trusty HR195 mower out of gas the other day. After refilling the tank, it wouldn't start. So, I turned it on it's side, pulled the carb bowl, found no obvious dirt, sprayed a little carb cleaner, and put it back together. Well, it started up just fine, but now it races (like it is going to blow up!) if I move the throttle off choke. Not sure what I did wrong. The only other thing I touched was the black petcock lever - moved it back and forth. I didn't touch any linkage or governor springs - so not sure how it has mind to go with an unlimited speed. Any ideas? thanks

Sometimes dirt on the top of the carb can make the throttle plate stick. Check it and clean as needed. (This is also consistent with your inability to restart . . .)

Exactly what it was - dirt on top of the carb. Cleaned it off and all is well.
Now I just might get around to fixing the self propelled...

thank you for the guidance
