I was brave and replaced the belt, spindles and blades on my riding mower this year. You see, I’m female so it was an accomplishment for me.
I was careful with everything so I’d be able to put it back together.
Wouldn’t you know a spring popped off! I know where one end goes but not the other end. I do have a diagram and yet, I still can’t tell where it goes. If you are standing in front facing the mower then look to the left on the deck. There you will see a bolt kind of away from everything else. That’s where one end goes.
I have attached a picture. I hope one of you fine men out there can assist me.
Thank You

Hard to tell by the picture but it looks the return spring for the spindle pulley brake. That is the arm with the brake pad on it that is resting against the pulley in the picture.

Congratulations & :welcome:
It is not your fault that your parents did not give you Meccano to play with as a child.:smiley_aafz:
Nothing on a mower than a woman can not do better than a man.
The spring does look like the brake spring.
It will go under the pulley and locate on the brake arm to pull it onto the pulley to stop the blades rotating when the tension arm releases pressure.

Use a strong flash light and by prefference a pencil type one that throws a thin beam if you have one.
The place where the spring goes will usually be polished shiny where the spring has been rubbing against it, so flicking a light around will pick up the shiny spot.

The only other place that has a spring the light is the PTO return spring.
This pulls against the heavy spring on the PTO cable ( the bit that pulls the the belt tight ) so it returns when you release the lever.

Under the seat is an ID tag and you will find things easier if you use the model numbers from that .
Any of the places like partstree will recognise that number as you type it in and bring up the exact right diagrams for you mower ( most times)

I agree on the brake arm spring. Don't you just love these MTD made Murray mowers. Only think worse is the MTD made Snapper mower sitting beside it at Walmart.

Here is another picture. You are right, the other pictures were terrible.

Take a look at page 44 of this manual. I think your spring is part number 27 and goes from the bolt in your pics to part number 4, brake assembly. If my memory is still any good it will hook between the assembly and the clip which holds the control arm on.
