Hello. I had an intermitent partial power loss on my Scag Turf Tiger (Model SMT-61V, serial C8601917) with the Kohler 27hp gas engine. I found out that the problem was that one cylinder was shutting down after the engine became hot, due to a faulty ignition module. My engine information is as follows:

Kohler model: CH740S
Spec. No.: CH740-0041
Serial: 3635310781
Build Date: 12/19/2006

I contacted a Scag Dealer Texas and also an Ebay seller, both agreed that the correct part ignition module for my engine was: 2458436-S. I Ordered two of them in order to install them new. The problem is that when we opened the engine, we found out that the installed modules were the 2458452 which have three wire terminals (with Black, Red and White wires attached). The new modules fit ok but they have just two terminals (one being wider than the other one) so I don't know how to adapt them. I have read that the white wire is for the safety interlock system and therefore I guess it should be connected to one of the terminals. The red wire has 12V, and the black one should be a ground. I tried connecting the red and white wires to each ignition module and also tried connecting the red wire to one terminal and the ground to the other one but the engine does not start. The fuel shuting valve solenoid emits a click sound so I guess it is opening and that the problem is that the modules are not generating a spark.

Any help will be greatly appreciated because I would preffer to adapt this modules rather that sending them back to the USA and buying the other ones. How should I connect these new modules? shouldn't the modules generate a spark when no wires are connected to them? what is the puporse of the red, white and black wires and why do the old modules need 3 connectors end the new ones just 2? What is the difference between the wider and the thiner terminal on the 2458436-S?

Thank you ver much for your help.

You have the wrong modules. The 2458436 module is used before serial number 363390001. Your serial number 2458452 is used after that number.

24 584 52-s supercedes to 24 584 63-s which supercedes to 24 584 89-s which is no longer available and is replaced with the 25 707 03-s MDI conversion kit as geelee mentioned.

Thank you very much for your help. I will order the 2570703-S conversion kit. Do you know how many terminals the conversion kit modules have? will I need to connect to them just the white kill wire or the black (ground) and red (12V) wires too?

the coils use 1 wire white comes in kit with directions, remove old ignition wires and sam box. take care to leave red wire still hooked up to the fuel shutoff solenoid. zip tie wires back in place ( come in kit)

Geelee,

My engine does not have a SAM box, I think what I have is a DSAI system with the 2458452 modules (3 terminals) installed. Is the 2570703-S conversion kit ok for a DSAI system as the one I have?

Thanks

Yes. When it is done you will have a single white wire going to each module which is the kill/ground wire to shut off the engine. Everything you need is in the kit along with instructions for installation.

Kohler spark advance ignition systems have some confusion. There was a Analog spark advance module(ASAM) and the Digital spark advance module(DSAM) Both used the 2 terminal 24 584 36-s modules, But because the DSAM became obsolete there was a DSAM to DSAI conversion kit. But the DSAI modules (24 584 52-s and the 24 584 89-s) became unavailable which then got upgraded to the MDI system. Engines using the original ASAM are not available for upgrade so they still use the 24 584 36-s modules that you received by error. And that doesn't include the 2 or 3 engine wiring harness changes due to voltage spikes from shutting of the electric pto, and jump starting the mower with a bad battery and the jumper cables were disconnected with the engine running killing the SAM, DSAI, and the associated modules.
