I have a 2001 Scotts 1642H lawn tractor with a corroded/destroyed diode.
I recently replaced the ignition switch, and it ran great until I tried to start it a second time - nothing happened.
Found and replaced the 15 amp blade fuse which was blown, and it started right up.
After mowing at a later time, I stopped the mower for break and when I tried to start it again the fuse blew again. 20190616_131656.jpg20190616_131525.jpg
Replaced it and drove into the garage.
Looking for bare, worn, grounded wires and found the inline diode from the Stator (black wire) was corroded and disintegrated.
Ok, figure that is to be expected for an 18 year old mower.

Problem is: I cannot locate a good wiring diagram for this mower, and do not know what type of diode I need and where to get it.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Can anyone tell me what diode to get and where to get it?

Is the diode critical to operation? I understand a diode allows electric current to flow in only one direction, so I think it must be critical.

If you would post the engine numbers we could get you a part number. Yes you need the diode as part of the charging system.

The only sticker on the engine (picture attached) notes this engine family is 1KHXS.4262GC
Guess the sticker with the engine SN and other info fell off?
I believe this Kohler Model is a CV16ST, and guess the Spec No is 43??.

The mower SN picture is attached.

Does this help?

If you would look at the other side of the engine you should see another sticker with the engine numbers. This manual is for a CV16 and might help you. If it is a CV16 the diode is part of the stator assembly.

Talked with a dealer and using the Scotts Mower SN got the following info:
Kohler engine model: CV16S
Kohler engine spec: 143518 or 143526

DIODE PART NUMBER IS GY00255

Dealer says this part is no longer available from J. Deere.
Where can I find this?

More information from calls:
The John Deere part number is GY00255.
The Kohler part number is 236602S.

FORGET THE KOHLER PART NUMBER.
APPARENTLY THIS IS THE PART NUMBER FOR A 3 PIN WIRING CONNECTOR AND NOT THE DIODE.

WHAT ARE THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THIS DIODE? DOES ANYONE KNOW?
DOES IT REDUCE 30 VOLTS TO 14 VOLTS? WHAT AMPERAGE?

I don’t know where you can find the spec for that diode. To my knowledge Kohler does not publish that info. As I stated before the diode is part of the stator assembly. Problem is that the two spec numbers you posted use two different stators. The spec 43518 uses stator number 12-085-08 and the spec 43526 uses stator number 12-085-03. You will have to figure out which spec number is for your engine. A good JD dealer should be able to do more than say it is one of two specs. Took the easy way out and look at which 16 hp engines were used on GX1642 tractors. If he would have looked it up by full serial number, it would have come back with one engine. I would either try another dealer or contact JD directly. Sorry I can’t be of more help, as I don’t work for a JD dealer.
