Toro Recycler Model 20020

One second the cable was working just fine and the next it broke at the "s" link where the cable fits into the slot on the bell handle bar that is pulled to engage the belt for the self propel assembly.

What are the major reasons the cable would break and what is the procedure for replacing it. On my model, the spring that attaches to the assembly located on the rear left side of the deck can be attached without having to remove the assembly.

Thanks for the replies

Step by step

1. Loosen the drive cable lock and make sure the cable moves freely.
2. Remove S-hook from drive handle.
3. Tip mower on it’s side, gas. Cap and carb up.
4. Remove black housing shield. 6-7 bolts
5. Remove blade and belt.
6. Rotate tranny to exposed belt guard.
7. Remove belt guard. You will need a #2 square bit.
8. Remove belt.
9. Remove cable.

Install belt and cable in reverse order. I recommend replacing belt if it is over two years old. The new cable should have a different S-hook design.

So my replacement traction cable arrived today and as Rivets says, the s hook is different in that it doesn't have a flat side,or as wide a flat side as does the one that broke. Will this be an issue as far as it staying securely in position on the bail?
