My plug has 5 pins. i purchased a replacemnt but it has a 6th lead off to the side. Is this a ground?

Usually yes.
Get your magnifier out and have a good look at the back of the switch.
The terminals are usually identified with letters
G=Ground
B=battery
M= Magneto kill wire
S=Start
L= Lights
A=Alternator
There can be multiple L & A terminals and the mowers with a reverse on the switch they are usually marked R

Magneto ignition switched always have a ground because to switch off the magneto kill wire needs to be grounded
So M + G = Off
M + Anything else = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

you have the 6 pin 109-4763 ign switch, if the old one had only 5 pins you want the 1-543070 switch
