I am new to this site. Anyways I have a hustler fastrak mower #926519 with a 18 hp honda engine # GXV-610. I just finished changing the starter solenoid with a brand new one. The solenoid is correct for this engine and looks identical to the old one. Having installed the new solenoid with electrical connections reestablished, I hooked up the battery cables. On connecting the positive terminal a whining sound from the solenoid was heard. The keys were in the off position. To stop the whining I had to disconnect the battery. Any ideas?

You have hooked up the trigger wire wrong.

There are several wires that go on the hot terminal
The battery cable
orange to power the mower
purple to recharge the battery

The black/red wire is the trigger wirs and goes to the trigger terminal.

Take a photo of the solenoid and post it so we can see what is connected to where.
If you take all of the small wires off & the starter still spins then there is a problem with the solenoid itself.
