I generally buy my SAE nuts/bolts by the pound at Tractor Supply to keep my bolt bins stocked. Much cheaper that way IMO.
Metrics are more pricey because they only sell those individually or in small packs.

The days of buying by the pound have long gone down here.
But yes buying in bulk is the way to go so I always buy full boxes, usually longer than needed cause it only takes a minute to shorten one
A riding pal always uses longer bolts for nut & bolt fitments, then cuts them shorter with a sort of sideways bolt cutter.
The deformed ends prevent then falling off & makes it difficult for "Midnight Spares" to pull them off.
