First hurdle on the 111, trans won't disengage

We picked up the mower today, first thing we noticed was the trans linkage between the shifter and trans was disconnected. We got it hooked up but tractor still will not find neutral. We jacked up the rear end and spun the wheels while running the shifter lever back and forth but nothing broke free. We also removed the dech and started removing all the sheet metal for easiest access to everything.

Is there a common failure point on the trans or a place susceptible to freeze up or bind that would keep it from shifting?

Making some progress, Got the motor started by jumping the battery straight to the starter. Removed the deck and cleaned the inside and outside off. Tried to drop the transaxle last night but the trans won't drop out of one of the U bolts that mount it to the frame. Soaking it overnight.

Use the link to the JD parts diagrams to check you have got all of the mounting bolts out.
Generally there is a couple of stabilizers at the front to prevent it rotating as well as the bolts around the axels.
Some are obvious some are hard to find.

thanks bert we got it, I think the one u bolt got tweaked a little bit when we released the first one and the front hangers. It was just a matter of wiggling and prying till it let loose. It's on the bench now and the drive pulley is soaking hopefully it will come off tomorrow. the shifter lever has all it';s detents and feels good it just doesn't do anything. Hopefully a good cleaning will resolve it or at least show what's wrong. the motor runs and the deck is good so if the trans can be saved he'll have a nice first mower.

UPDATE! The trans broke free! # 1 son was cleaning the brake disc off and removing it for repair and it started shifting through all the gears! Time to start shopping for parts!

Can you post the model number of the tranny, I may have a manual for it.

The only thing it says is Peerless a div of Tecumseh with a patent number and 32.125 The wheels still spin in opposite directions in neutral but there is slip and all the gears work so we're going to exercise it a little because it's been sitting for years.

If you would look carefully there should be either a small tag or numbers located on the casting where the axle enters the housing.
