Battery charging light came on today. I assume it means battery isn't being charged. New battery and was cutting leaves and ran out of gas, when I gassed up and started mower the light came on and didn't go out. Any thought as to what it could be. Thanks

Voltage Regulator?

Good morning. Yes, I would check the voltage at the battery first with the engine off and record that reading.
Then start the engine and run it at full throttle and recheck the voltage.
It should be between 13-14 volts DC.
If it only reads battery (i.e. 12 volts or less), I would suspect the regulator.
But, before you go and buy a regulator, first verify the stator (charge coil behind the flywheel) is working.
To do that, unplug your regulator.
On the connector, locate the two wires that are the same color. These are your stator wires.
Set your voltmeter to AC volts.
Start the engine and run at full throttle.
Put your volt meter leads on both wires at the same time.
You should be getting approximately 35 volts AC or higher.
If so, your issue is the voltage regulator.
Good luck!
